Jamie Hawke is best-known in southern Thedas as one of the rebels who tore down the Circles of Magi, however true that claim to fame actually is. Feared and loved in equal measure in his former home of Kirkwall as the man who killed Knight-Commander Meredith Stannard and helped the mages of the Kirkwall Gallows escape the templars' annulment, Jamie gained a notorious reputation of a much smaller locale as the Prince of Starkhaven's arcane advisor later in life. He founded community gardens across the entire city and opened a school of healing and medicine for local children in the Starkhaven alienage.

Many Marcher historians credit him for the gradual skew in Prince Vael's civic policies towards social change, including the famous alliance with Marquise Briala of Halamshiral; others argue that his influence on the court of Starkhaven and its city council was not as extreme, and that he only exerted subtle pull, if any, on the prince.

His life is most well-documented in a decade of Kirkwall politics before the dissolution of the Nevarran Accord; from the halls of the viscount to the alleys of Darktown. Jamie Hawke was an advisor to the late Viscount Dumar, a mercenary on the books of the Kirkwall City Guard, a former member of Athenril's smuggling ring, heir to the Amell estate, occasional business partner of the Coterie, investor in the notoriously cursed Bone Pit mine, enemy of the Kirkwall Carta, and the infamous Champion of Kirkwall.

In fact much of Jamie Hawke's life is shrouded in mystery, half-truths, and hearsay. He was allegedly a Friend of Red Jenny, an ally of the former Grand Enchanter Fiona and the Mage Underground in Kirkwall, present at the Siege of Adamant Fortress, a vanguard of the Mage Rebellion, a member of the southern Mage Collective as well as Marquise Briala's spy network, a blood mage, a bard, and the lover of the Prince of Starkhaven. None of these claims have ever been definitively proven, though they are oft-repeated in popular legend, and some even make an appearance in his notorious biography, the Tale of the Champion.

Jamie and Sebastian became close friends shortly after Sebastian returned to Kirkwall in (year) Dragon; despite-- or perhaps because of-- their opposing beliefs, they valued each other's opinions, debated fiercely, and walked up and down the city at night talking and arguing about everything under the sun. Sebastian often said it was Jamie who had reminded him of his duty to Starkhaven and his right to take the throne, as well as Jamie who opened his eyes to the rampant corruption of the templar order and the Chantry's failure to protect its people.

The rumors that Jamie was Sebastian Vael's lover persisted for the duration of both men's lives; within the city proper and the prince's court, it was considered an open secret that the prince's arcane advisor was also his lover. In fact Sebastian Vael never married; the crown would pass to his cousin, Lucia, whom he took in after the death of her mother, upon his abdication of the throne in his old age. After Lucia assumed the throne, Sebastian and Jamie retired from public life, and the rumors might have faded with them, if Lucia had not commissioned a portrait for the ancestral gallery depicting herself with both men standing behind her, identical to the other Vael family portraits. In later years, the palatial garden would come to be known as the Lovers' Retreat; it's said the garden was tended by Jamie for so many years that his magic sunk into the soil, ensuring flowers would always bloom there no matter who sat on the throne of Starkhaven. In the heart of the garden, the fishpond is embellished with a tiled mosaic design of three entwined flowers that represents Prince Sebastian, his cousin, and his advisor-- or so the story goes.
