Mikal Glavonak was a living legend in many different circles; a notorious Red Jenny, a thorn in the side of the Marcher Merchants' Guild, an advisor to the Second Inquisition, and the person known only as "Rook", involved in the Northern catastrophe where new Blight was unleashed.
She was well-known in academic circles for her contributions to the history of dwarven stonework, glasswork, and runes; her reputation was such that surfacer scholars as far from her as Ayesleigh or the Anderfels would write asking for her eye on a particular piece of a thaig's column, or the craftsmanship of an ancient rune. Her cataloguing and preservation of Kal Repartha in the Hissing Wastes was hailed as some of the most significant scholarship of the Dragon Age.
Background
Mikal was the first child born to Name Surname Glavonak and Name Glavonak, in 9:something Dragon. She grew up in Hercinia, though as a child she occasionally was taken to visit her father's uncles in Amaranthine and remembered Ferelden fondly. Her mother's family was an old artisan house in Orzammar; they wrote often, but Mikal did not have the opportunity to meet them in person until she was old enough to sneak into Orzammar undetected.
Mikal's mother was a glassblower; she worked as an artisan in Hercinia, and crafted a great deal of the stained glass in local chantries and noble houses, as well as the nearby Circle of Magi. Her aunt specialized as a lenscrafter, with a particular interest in enchantment. Mikal learned her love for glassblowing and the intricacies of enchantment at her aunt and mother's knees. Her father was ex-Carta and worked as a laborer when she was a child, later taking up smithing after training with some of his extended family. He taught her to make nails and horseshoes, but she never found much use for either, preferring to study armorsmithing and engraving.
As a teenager, Mikal first apprenticed herself to her aunt. Restless and incensed at some of her city's laws, she became involved with the Friends of Red Jenny, who were more militant at that time, and began to train with weaponry and in martial arts. Though the Jennies wanted her trained as a rogue, she chose to study a classic sword and shield style, wanting to know how to protect people. Her involvement came in handy in several city scandals, and soon her place in the Jennies was cemented.
Through her twenties, Mikal began to butt heads with the Merchants' Guild, culminating in a heist where she, along with her cousin Max Cadash and Max's Carta colleague Lantos disrupted a lucrative deal with the Coterie and Circle of Magi (?). She laid low in Kirkwall, right under the Guild's nose, where she met and befriended several interesting people.

Romance
As a fellow scholar of history and technology, Mikal was particularly thrilled to make the acquaintance of Bellara Lutare, whose work on resonance stabilization she had read and admired when she first began studying the Veil Jumpers' collective body of work. The two women bonded initially over shared interests in glasswork; Bellara, as a student of eluvian usage and local expert on eluvian maintenance and repair, and Mikal as a glassblower and lenscrafter. But it was their shared mutual interest in the history of Thedas and especially that of their peoples that allowed their friendship to deepen. Mikal is a quiet person and often does not share her interests or many opinions with people she doesn't know well, but was charmed by Bellara's passion and excitement for the subjects she cared about. Bellara felt truly listened to by Mikal, and was touched by her genuine interest and enjoyment of Bellara's company and 'rambling'. They began to study the quirks and arcane science of the Lighthouse together, and compiled a shared journal on the Crossroads, the new Blight, and any arcane oddities they encountered together in Arlathan. Bellara also later began to share her own original writing with Mikal, and enjoyed seeing Mikal's own personal artwork and designs. She was excited to learn Mikal had once been a Red Jenny, and always wanted to hear more stories of their group and exploits.
Mikal wasn't a particularly good cook, preferring very simple recipes she could prepare in bulk, allowing her to spend more time working or studying, but she enjoyed learning new recipes and techniques with Bellara and whoever else was cooking with them at the time. She was also thrilled to learn more about the Veil Jumpers' work and visit their camp in Arlathan, to meet some of the finest minds of contemporary Thedas and hear their wisdom, and to ask Bellara plenty of questions about her own work and studies.
Mikal was a solitary person by nature, though not opposed to company, and found Bellara a very restful and warm presence. She did not take lovers lightly, and was very touched by Bellara's frank and friendly courtship. Bellara had been very lonely since the loss of her brother, and was encouraged and cheered by Mikal's constant quiet presence and her steady affection. They often enjoyed discussing theories, ideas, books and any topic that caught their interest. After the Veilguard dissolved, Mikal traveled with Bellara, and began helping her write her next book. They also visited Mikal's family and Bellara's clan, to introduce each other as their partner.
