Liathari Surana is an elven mage, formerly of Kinloch Hold in Ferelden, and the Fereldan Warden-Commander of the Grey. For her part in slaying the archdemon Urthemiel, she was named a Hero of Ferelden; for her defense of the city of Amaranthine and continued notoriety as a powerful apostate, she is lovingly known within the north as the Shining Lady. As of 9:42 Dragon her whereabouts are only known to the Grey Wardens themselves.

Background

Liathari was born in 9:number Dragon in the Amaranthine alienage, the youngest daughter of the Surana family. Her magic manifested at a very young age, and during a peak of templar activity; she was taken from her family and enrolled in the Circle, knowing nothing of her own past besides her family name, and that she had been born in Amaranthine.

Despite her true arcane strength, Liathari feared her teachers, the chanters, and the templars within Kinloch, and passed beyond almost all notice as a below-average student due to her lack of confidence and overwhelming self-doubt when asked to perform spells. She was studious, but possessed no real power. Her proclivity for Creation magic drew Irving's attention; the archmage of the Circle was convinced that Liathari's talents had greater depths, and began to tutor her in private shortly before her Harrowing.

Liathari was shy, friendly, and self-effacing. She made few friends besides Jowan, who had been taken to the Circle not long after herself; the two considered each other the closest thing to family. Her other relationship of note was with rumored maleficar Seven Amell; an entropy mage and a bastard of a noble Marcher house, Sev watched Liathari and Jowan from a distance as they grew, believing them to be in danger from the Circle itself.

Dragon Age: Origins

Prologue

Liathari Harrows well, making friend with the spirits within the local Fade, and is relieved she will not be Tranquilized and can prepare for further studies in Creation. Duncan impresses her when he speaks frankly with her on their tour through the Circle, and the idea of being a Warden seems like a nice story, but far too frightening in real life. When Jowan comes to her for help, she is terrified of Greagoir's retribution, but refuses to let him become Tranquil or for Lily to be punished. Within the phylactery chamber, Liathari is briefly tempted by the thought of destroying all of them in the chamber, but is horrified by her own idea. Jowan's blood magic secretly thrills her, and she is desperately relieved to be rescued by Duncan, though she fears she will die even more quickly as a Grey Warden, and resigns herself to a dismal fate.

The Battle of Ostagar

Liathari is overwhelmed by being able to freely explore the Warden camp at Ostagar and being encouraged to practice magic openly by her fellow recruits in the Wilds. She finds Duncan's presence reassuring, and is somewhat leery of the others, though she and Alistair begin to discuss history and politics of Ferelden within the first few minutes of meeting each other and walking the camp, as he introduces her to the other Wardens.

Out in the Wilds, Liathari is drawn at once to Morrigan, curious about her life and a great admirer of her magic. She and Alistair clash briefly over this, though Liathari allows the argument to drop. She passes her Joining in a state of shock; with the Harrowing so fresh in her mind, she hasn't really had a chance to unwind from it, and braces herself for death before coming to consciousness sometime later. She is stunned by her inclusion in the war council of Cailan and Loghain, privately finding Cailan concerningly boyish and naive for a political leader, and is nervous about her first mission. Neither she nor Alistair want to leave the field of battle or Duncan's side, but they learn to work together as they fight darkspawn through the Tower of Ishal.

Upon waking in Flemeth's hut, Liathari is terrified when she realizes that she and Alistair are the only two Wardens left, it is truly the worst possible situation for her. She tries to comfort Alistair, but is unsure of what he needs to hear, and is relieved when Morrigan joins their group. Fighting darkspawn on her own through the Wilds to the Imperial Highway is one of the worst experiences of her young life. Morrigan despairs of her skills, and Alistair is too lost in his own grief to be of much help.
